Sioux Falls Power’s Carter Sanderson Selected in NHL Draft

Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Power is thrilled to announce that forward Carter Sanderson, who skated in the 2023–24 season under coach Noelle Needham, has been drafted in the sixth round (169th overall) of the 2025 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins—making history as the first player ever from South Dakota to be selected.

Carter, a 6-foot-1, 196-pound center from Pierre, SD, was a standout for the Power’s 16U AAA squad during the 2023–24 season, tallying 36 goals and 73 points in 65 games. Under the guidance of Noelle Needham, Carter developed into a dynamic, full-ice player whose work ethic and leadership earned him attention from Division I programs and NHL scouts alike .

Following his time in Sioux Falls, Carter advanced to the USHL's Muskegon Lumberjacks, contributing to their Clark Cup championship run. He’s currently a committed recruit for the University of North Dakota, where he’ll compete in NCAA Division I hockey starting in the 2026 season .

“Watching Carter’s journey—from Pierre, through the Power, and into the USHL—has been nothing short of inspiring,” said Noelle Needham, head coach of the Sioux Falls Power. “His competitiveness and character embody what our program stands for. We couldn’t be more proud.”

Carter shared his excitement after hearing his name called:

“It was surreal—I’ve dreamed of this since I was a kid. Being the first South Dakotan drafted shows what’s possible if you’re willing to put in the work.”

He added that conversations with Pittsburgh began in March and intensified in early July, setting the stage for this milestone selection .

Looking ahead, Carter plans to return to Muskegon next season to continue his development before arriving at UND in 2026. He says he’s eager to elevate his production and embrace a leadership role with both the Lumberjacks and eventually the Fighting Hawks.
